Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their young children, Clara and Fritz, host a wonderful Christmas party at their home. Uncle Drosselmeyer, a mysterious inventor, arrives with magical dancing dolls to delight the guests. Clara receives an unusual gift: a nutcracker in the shape of a handsome prince. Clara is delighted, but Fritz is jealous and breaks the nutcracker! Mrs. Stahlbaum repairs it and all is well again. After the guests depart, Clara falls asleep with her Nutcracker Prince in her arms.

As Clara sleeps, rats invade the house! They steal food and rummage through presents, and are led by the ruthless Rat Queen. Clara wakes up and is horrified. She cheers when an army of brave toy soldiers comes to help! Leading them is none other than the Nutcracker Prince, come to life. After a pitched battle, the soldiers prevail, and Clara and the Nutcracker share a beautiful dance. The Nutcracker tells Clara of the magical land that he comes from, and she happily agrees to travel there with him.
